He is still active and has long been unsurpassed, unsurpassed. It is a rare case, even unique, when such categorical markers can be clearly stated in relation to someone. In the world of opera, music in particular.
Superlatives are not just right about him because he is one of the most versatile artists: singer (baritone, tenor, then baritone again), conductor, theater specialist, head of institution, competition director, honest philanthropist, and so on. Looking at the fragile numbers, he is a record holder with his now sixty-four-year career,
with his roles of one hundred and fifty, his performances well over four thousand, his countless live and studio recordings, and his opera films. But what is an even more special fact is that he is a witness to great eras and ideological changes, sometimes also a contributor and shaper, who connected a series of generations through his profession. There was not, and most likely will not be, a similar cultural diplomat in the history of music who would have faced such a political system during his tours and performances. He could meet almost all of his defining personalities, rulers, presidents, archbishops, religious leaders, artists, and athletes of his age.
Nor is it an exaggeration that Domingo has become a link between the centuries, as his stage partners included those born in the last years of the 19th century and today he mentors the children of the dawn of the 21st century with joint performances.
Működésének utóbbi bő negyedszázadát részben élőben is követve, jól ismert zenei, énekesi, színészi kvalitásait méltatni közhely lenne. Apropó viszont, hogy Gáti István (nem mellékesen nemzetközi hírű bariton) szakszerű fordításában nemrég magyarul is megjelent a svéd drámai szoprán, Birgit Nilsson rusztikusan őszinte, szellemes önéletrajza, aki frappáns villámjellemzéseket írt többek között kiváló tenor partnereiről is. Keresetlen, mégis választékos, lényegi értékelései sorában Domingóval kapcsolatban a következőket rögzítette visszaemlékezésében: „A minden szempontból hatalmas Pavarottinak volt egy fantáziadús, ám ítélőképességgel nem rendelkező menedzsere. Ezt a titulust adta ügyfelének: »The King of High C«.
Jóllehet Nilsson utóbbi megjegyzésével szinte mindenki egyetért, a 2019-ben csúcsosodó MeToo-vihar keltette „divathullám” Domingót is elérte. Reakciókból, netes kommentekből jól érzékelhető a szakmai féltékenység is.
A rövid, gyorsan ellobbanó karrierek időszakát élve ma sokan nem tudnak mit kezdeni Domingo fizikai csodával felérő, végtelennek tűnő művészi energiáival, állandó tenni akarásával.
A New York-i Metropolitanben a Macbeth főpróbájáig jutott, Sharpless konzulként való debütálása a Madama Butterflyban már elmaradt. A jelenleg a legütősebb énekesi gárdával, a legtöbb hazai sztárral dolgozó moszkvai Nagyszínház és a szentpétervári Mariinszkij lecsapott rá, Domingo gyakori vendég a két orosz nagyvárosban.
Magyarországon is rendszeresen megfordul, hiszen a Virtuózok támogatója, nagykövete és részvényese lett. Hiánypótló fellépéseire azonban türelmetlenül várunk. 2018-as budapesti Simon Boccanegrájának elhalasztása a megbocsáthatatlan vétek kategóriájába tartozik. Márpedig a Domingo-féle atyákkal és elbukó baritonhősökkel itthon bizony adósak nekünk. Simon, Nabucco, Miller, Macbeth, Foscari, Athanaël és a többi. Amíg még nem késő.

English version:
Following the last abundant quarter of a century of its operation, partly live, it would be commonplace to praise the well-known qualities of music, singing and acting. By the way, István Gáti (not incidentally an internationally renowned baritone) recently published the rustically honest, witty autobiography of the Swedish dramatic soprano Birgit Nilsson in Hungarian, who wrote striking lightning characteristics about his excellent tenor partners, among others. In a series of unsolicited, yet eclectic, substantive assessments of Domingo, he recorded the following in his memoir: “The all-powerful Pavarotti had an imaginative but judgmental manager. He gave this title to his client: “The King of High C”. When asked his colleague, Plácido Domingo, what he had to say about this, what he thought of the name, he replied that he did not claim such an address, as he did not have a high c. Of course, it is better to be a king who has no country than someone who has been exiled. By the way, Plácido underestimated himself in this case. From the audience, but also singing with him on stage, I heard him sing beautiful high cs countless times. But this is the singer and artist - one of the greatest artists in the world! - he has always been known for his modest and sympathetic actions. "
While almost everyone agrees with Nilsson’s last remark, the “fashion wave” caused by the MeToo storm that culminated in 2019 has also reached Domingo. The cultural policy of the United States and Western Europe, which had become a parody of himself, challenged even him, this respected Spanish gentleman. Behind the truly faceless accusation are probably those who have failed to wait for the end of Domingo’s unprecedentedly long career and extensive international musical roles. His stainless steel could have aroused generational contradictions and harmed business interests. It may have caused confusion, confusion in some: how is it possible that in his extensive system of relations - in the spirit of mutual respect - he always found a common voice with everyone? Professional jealousy can also be clearly seen from reactions and online comments.
Living in a period of short, fast-paced careers, many today know nothing to do with Domingo’s seemingly endless artistic energies, physical will, constant will to do.
Conspiracy theories were born about his origins, but even his age. Some claim he is older than what he states in his biography. It’s hard to start with this “critique,” because if you’re really over eighty, your miracle is even more inexplicable. Others do not believe that at this age a vocal voice can still speak without amplification. Although his breath is denser, his baritone, who has been comforted back from the tenor, is tired more easily, sometimes the arch of phrasing is broken, Domingo is still considered one of the leading artists of our time by his technique and acting vein.
In the end, his accusers (or the accusers used) did not gain a reputation for fifteen minutes. They had nothing to say or were ashamed to stand in public with scandal-free, flat stories about Domingo’s romantically naive, enthusiastic courtships, or, worse, subtly frivolous, year-round flirtations. And she obviously didn't think that her admiration for the ladies, her Mediterranean temperament, would one day be overwhelmed. The grimace of fate, the absurd and grotesque tragicomedy of our present, is that with Domingo, the kind of old-fashioned mentality in a good sense will disappear from the art world, which will later be best cried back by the perpetrators and users of this incitement.
His Ellendrukkers succeeded in voluntarily withdrawing from the American and some European stages for the sake of peace. At the Metropolitan in New York, Macbeth’s rehearsal culminated in Sharpless’s debut as consul in Madama Butterfly, which has been delayed. Missed occasions in Dőren. Not him, but the Met, the United States has lost the most with this. His Sicilian veggies were taken away in Salzburg and the Belisario in Bergamo by the Covid disaster, two new roles that fell victim to the viral situation. The gigametropolis of Milan, Verona, Florence, Madrid, Vienna, the Middle and Far East are waiting for you. Domingo, the Moscow Bolshoi Theater and Mariinsky of St. Petersburg, which currently has the most percussive ensemble, most domestic stars, have struck him, Domingo being a frequent guest in the two Russian cities.
He also turns regularly in Hungary, as he became a supporter, ambassador and shareholder of the Virtuosos. However, we are looking forward to filling in the gaps. The postponement of Simon Boccanegra in Budapest in 2018 falls into the category of unforgivable sins. However, with Domingo's fathers and failing baritone heroes, they are indeed indebted to us at home. Simon, Nabucco, Miller, Macbeth, Foscari, Athanaël and others. Until it's too late.
